I’m talking about Universal Epic (WOW) Universe. For the record, I put the (WOW) in the name after my visit!

I am so happy to have been in this industry long enough to see the continuing evolution of theme parks, and the advancement of amazing rides and attractions that will never stop thrilling and entertaining the hundreds of millions of guests who depend on us every year to continue raising the bar as it relates to creative, immersive storytelling experiences to enhance their visits.

For decades, Disney has led the charge in "setting the bar" for spectacular rides and attractions in our industry, solidifying itself as the “gold standard” for over 70 years. In the world of destination parks, for over 40 years, Disney and Universal have been locked in a fierce, exhilarating, Hertz/Avis-style boxing match, each pushing the other to greater heights as it relates to experiential attractions.

The real turning point in this theme park product armaments race came in 1991 when Universal Studios Florida introduced the "Back to the Future" ride — a mind-blowing journey through time in a souped-up DeLorean. This was the moment in the boxing match when the gloves came off, and the fight truly deepened. It was the first time in our industry’s history that Disney was, quite frankly, "Out-Disneyed." The "Back to the Future" ride was the cleverest and most technologically advanced ride experience the theme park world had ever seen up to that point. It was a game-changer for Universal Studios’ future ride/product development.

One of the biggest strategic missteps Disney ever made in theme park product development was opting out of the auction for the Harry Potter franchise. J.K. Rowling’s vision and demands did not align with Disney’s preferences, leading Rowling to sell the rights to Warner Bros, who turned Harry Potter into a film franchise so popular it rivaled even George Lucas’s Star Wars. Despite this early Disney error, for years Disney tried relentlessly to acquire the theme park rights to Harry Potter — but once again, NBC Universal, under Comcast, swooped in and sealed the deal. When “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” opened at Universal Studios in 2010, it marked one of the most significant leaps a theme park had ever generated in attendance and revenue growth in a single year. The numbers were jaw-dropping and launched Universal into a new era of record-breaking success, which has sustained to date.

Last week, I was invited for a private tour of the new theme park……a total walking tour of the new Universal Epic (WOW) Universe (UEU), and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The new park, covering a massive 750 acres including support facilities, is a masterpiece of design, architecture, and technology. The level of detail is astonishing at every segment of the facility.

Standing in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic area felt like stepping into a bustling European city streetscape. The vanishing lines and architectural illusions used in the design were some of the best I've ever observed — truly magical execution — perfectly capturing the essence of Rowling’s incredible stories.

Another standout for me was the Celestial Park area, home to a breathtaking carousel. It’s not just a ride — it's an art piece. The carousel's building is the most creative and whimsical structure I've ever seen. Unfortunately, my tour was at high noon, so I didn’t get to see the building illuminated at night — but I can only imagine the display. Honestly, it would be worth a trip back just to witness its majesty, aglow in all its splendor.

With over 50 unique experiences, Universal Epic (WOW!) Universe will easily command two or more days of a family’s Orlando vacation. The park’s scale and offerings are simply too vast to fully absorb and appreciate in a single day.

Timing-wise, my visit happened right in the thick of testing and training. One pleasant moment occurred in the Dark Universe when I encountered The Invisible Man, dressed impeccably in period style of the 1933 classic film. He remained flawlessly in character — witty, mysterious, and utterly charming. I can’t wait to return to meet Dracula, Frankenstein, or the Wolfman, and to experience the fantastic fun-filled horror that obviously exists throughout the area.

Thrill-seekers will absolutely flock to the new dueling double-racer coaster, "Stardust Racers." This ride is destined to be an instant hit, especially among the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE). With its smooth twists, head-on passes, and pulse-pounding inversions, "Stardust Racers" is set to be a leader in the world of coasters — a ride designed to surprise, challenge, and exhilarate all who ride. This will be a repeater for sure among global coaster enthusiasts!

Over in Super Nintendo World, the "Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge" ride is a technological marvel. Guests can challenge and compete against each other, blending virtual and physical worlds in a way that will surely blow people’s minds. The ride's design embraces cutting-edge technology that ensures an interactive experience unlike anything currently offered in the theme park landscape. Cutting edge.

Of course, no theme park visit is complete without sampling the food — and Universal Epic (WOW!) Universe delivers big time. Alyson and I explored all five themed areas and discovered some of the most imaginative and mouth-watering cuisine I’ve ever seen served in a park. What’s even more impressive is that all the food is prepared either on-site at the restaurants or in the massive 24/7 commissary kitchens. I also took a hard look at the pricing, and I pleasantly report— the food and beverage prices are extremely reasonable. There’s no "sticker shock" for families looking to feed their kids, which is a refreshing and thoughtful move by Universal. The various themed area menus offer a diverse range of edible options, both enticing and affordable. You will not be disappointed by their spectacular food and beverage program, and yes, you can get Butterbeer at the new park!

The merchandise shops are almost fully stocked with thousands of SKUs, and they are beautifully designed. The merch offerings are outstanding. I had the pleasure of chatting with Gabby, a team member working in one of the shops. She was exactly what you want in an employee — warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to be there. Her enthusiasm added to the immersive experience and gave me confidence that Universal’s staff will be one of the highlights of a guest’s experience.

As we approach the grand opening on May 22nd, 2025, my expectations for Universal Epic (WOW!) Universe is sky-high. This park is not just another addition to Orlando’s theme park lineup — it’s a bold statement. A game-changer to the global theme park industry. It’s Universal telling the world they are not chasing Disney anymore — they are blazing their own trail.

For theme park fans, thrill-seekers, and families alike, UEU promises an unforgettable journey through magical lands, thrilling rides, fun-filled eat fests, and magical shopping experiences all brought together through innovative high-tech storytelling.

Mark Woodbury’s vision, supported by his team of thousands has risen to a level in the Global Theme Park Industry that ranks at the top of the best entertainment attractions ever delivered.

I could go on and on and on, and I will when I write “part two”. For now, I do not want to give all the surprises away; however, I do want you to anticipate the SIZZLE that will be found May 22nd when Universal Epic Universe throws open the doors, revealing the world’s newest theme park. I strongly suggest you not be one of those who say, “I’m going to wait until the dust settles a few months or a year and then go”. I have the feeling the dust is not going to settle on UEU for a long time. Mark your calendars 5/22/25— the countdown to an Epic new theme park has officially begun!
