A REMARKABLE PRE-OPENING OF EPIC PROPORTION!

Looking back over my career, I have participated in helping create more than 20 Theme Park Pre-Opening Programs, from step #1 to the Opening Day festivities. From Kings Island, Kings Dominion, Canada’s Wonderland, Australia’s Wonderland, Lotte World, Enchanted Kingdom, American Dream Park, Hopi Hari, Terra Encantada, and a dozen more, I must emphasize the Epic Universe Pre-Opening plan “has set the bar” for all future major theme park pre-openings globally. Their early ride testing (in some cases a year), their advanced testing and serving of their creative food and beverage program, and their general chronology for all programs, including marketing, advertising, and media day trials, has been cutting edge. And of paramount importance, their strategic decision to pre-open the new hotels prior to the theme park’s inauguration in May has proven to be brilliant, providing an early shakeout period far ahead of the theme park opening, which in itself will require major attention once open.

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the chronology of the Epic Universe theme park project, beginning with the initial announcement. Looking back, the Epic Universe project journey began on August 1, 2019, when Universal announced plans for their newest theme park, Epic Universe, which, as we are currently seeing, is the company’s most innovative theme park to date.

The initial vision promised immersive experiences across multiple themed lands, aiming for a 2023 debut. Construction commenced promptly, signaling Universal's commitment to expanding its Orlando resort footprint. However, no one could foretell the short-term difficulties that would befall Universal. Not to be thwarted, no matter what has been thrown at them, they have persevered and are on the absolute correct path to introducing the world’s newest technologically advanced theme park!

There have been many unforeseen challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a construction halt for Universal on April 30, 2020. This led them towards supporting a low profile during this difficult period, as the global uncertainty on nearly every aspect of life was unfolding. The world was re-prioritizing health and safety for the world, resulting in a major stoppage for Universal and many others.

A year later in March 2021 as things loosened up, Universal reignited construction efforts and re-engaged the public with strategic updates. They provided behind-the-scenes glimpses and major concept art releases, which rekindled excitement among theme park enthusiasts and bloggers, as well as the general public, effectively bringing Epic Universe back into the theme park spotlight. By January of 2022, work had accelerated to a point where Universal announced its new expected opening date of July 15, 2025.

However, on October 24, 2024, Universal made a bold move and officially announced that Epic Universe would open even earlier, on May 22, 2025. To support the credibility of this announcement, this declaration was accompanied by details on ticket sales, vacation packages, and the unveiling of the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, elevating the resort's status as a comprehensive destination. It received great public reaction, particularly from the industry influencers and bloggers.

In these recent months leading up to the opening, Universal has expanded its messages, providing exciting and detailed insights into the park's five themed areas. These are:

Celestial Park: The central hub featuring lush landscapes and the innovative Stardust Racers roller coaster. It also includes an Amazing Carousel and the edifice in which it resides.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic: An immersive journey through the iconic British Ministry of Magic and 1920s wizarding Paris. This is a ride unlike any of its predecessors, moving vertically, laterally, and a few other ways that will make your body ask……”what’s going on””!

Super Nintendo World: A vibrant, colorful land bringing beloved Nintendo characters to life, including the groundbreaking Donkey Kong Country area with the Mine-Cart Madness ride, along with the Super Mario Brothers.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk: An interactive experience where guests can meet dragons and explore the Viking village. It offers the Fire Drill boat ride and the Hiccups winged gliders, which simulates riding a Dragon at 45 MPH!

Dark Universe: A thrilling land inspired by Universal's classic monsters, offering a unique blend of horror and adventure. You can actually become a monster of the highest degree!

On the continuing path of exciting the public, ticket sales were suddenly commenced in October 2024 - 7 months before the official opening! This program initially was offering multi-day packages that included access to Epic Universe (one day, and the other two parks as you desired). This strategic move allowed guests to plan comprehensive vacations, assuring and integrating the new park into their Universal Orlando experience.

By January 2025, the Universal Stella Nova Hotel opened, followed by the Terra Luna Hotel in March. These additions expanded accommodation options, catering to diverse guest preferences. In February, theme park operational training intensified, with team members present on-site sans construction gear, indicating a shift from building to operational readiness. So much so that an exclusive Starbucks opened for team members, and previews of food & beverage, along with thousands of merchandise SKU offerings appeared, ensuring the training staff familiarity with the new park's offerings.

So far, April is marking epic milestones. The luxurious Helios Grand Hotel opens tomorrow (April 16) as I write, providing guests with premium accommodations.Starting April 17, annual passholders will be granted exclusive previews of Epic Universe, allowing for final operational assessments and guest feedback. Can anyone tell me when this has ever been done?!

As I have stated, Universal's methodical and transparent approach to launching Epic Universe sets a new industry standard for the theme park industry. By strategically releasing information, engaging with the public, and ensuring operational readiness well ahead of opening, Universal has demonstrated a masterclass in theme park development and launch strategy. This approach has not only built anticipation through unheard of media support well in advance of an opening but also helps ensure a probable seamless guest experience from day one.

As the first major theme park to open in Orlando in 26 years, Epic Universe represents a significant milestone in the evolution of introducing themed entertainment to the public. Universal's innovative pre-opening strategies and early transparent communication to the guest promises an unparalleled experience for them. From my professional viewpoint, Epic Universe sets a precedent for all future theme park and attraction developments in the global industry. An “Epic” opening for sure!
